Road Freight: Via the Balkans to Italy
The standard road route runs Istanbul → Kapikule → Bulgaria → Serbia → Slovenia or Croatia → Trieste or Milan. FTL transit time: 4–6 business days. LTL groupage: 5–7 days. The Balkans route via the E-80 and E-70 corridors is well-established for TIR transport, with regular customs facilities at all transit borders. Alternative routing via Romania → Hungary → Austria → Brenner Pass is available for Austrian-border deliveries.
Sea Freight: Istanbul–Trieste–Genoa
For high-volume or non-time-sensitive cargo, sea freight from Ambarlı (Istanbul) or Mersin to Trieste, Genoa, La Spezia or Livorno is a competitive option. Weekly FCL services transit in 5–10 days. LCL consolidations depart 2–3 times per week. Container feeder services link Istanbul to most Italian Adriatic ports. Sea freight rates are generally more stable than road rates during peak TIR seasons.
EU Customs Entry
Italy is an EU member state. Turkish industrial goods enter under the Customs Union agreement duty-free with an A.TR movement certificate. Non-Customs Union goods (food, agriculture) are subject to EU Common Customs Tariff. Our customs team handles Turkish export formalities; we work with Italian customs brokers (spedizionieri doganali) for import clearance.
