When people hear "dangerous goods transport," they picture explosives or chemical weapons. In reality, ADR (Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) covers a far wider range: paint, varnish, perfume, fertilizer, lithium batteries, oxygen cylinders and some cleaning agents all fall under its scope.

What Is ADR?

ADR is a multilateral agreement signed in Geneva in 1957 governing the international road transport of dangerous goods. Over 50 European countries — including Turkey — are contracting parties. The current version is ADR 2025, updated every two years.

The 9 ADR Classes

  1. Class 1 — Explosives
  2. Class 2 — Gases (LPG, aerosols, oxygen cylinders)
  3. Class 3 — Flammable liquids (petrol, ethanol, paint)
  4. Class 4 — Flammable solids
  5. Class 5 — Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
  6. Class 6 — Toxic and infectious substances
  7. Class 7 — Radioactive material
  8. Class 8 — Corrosive substances (sulfuric acid, caustic soda)
  9. Class 9 — Miscellaneous (lithium batteries, dry ice, magnetic material)
