Why Is the Gulf Corridor So Important?

In 2024 and 2025, Turkey-UAE trade volume recorded significant year-on-year growth. Construction materials, textiles, food, machinery and furniture — Turkish exporters are securing an increasingly strong foothold in the Gulf market. This growth naturally brings rising demand for logistics.

At KEY Forwarding, we see this demand first-hand. Every month, shipments leave Istanbul, Izmir and Mersin for Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. But which transport modes work best, how long do they take, and what customs documents do you need?

Transport Modes and Transit Times

Road freight: There is no direct road connection from Turkey to the UAE. Transit via Iraq or Saudi Arabia is required, typically taking 10-15 business days, though border waiting times can vary.

Sea freight: Container shipping from Mersin or Izmir to Jebel Ali Port (Dubai) is the most popular and cost-effective option. FCL transit takes 10-14 days; LCL typically 18-22 days.

Air freight: For urgent or high-value cargo, direct flights from Istanbul to Dubai offer 1-3 day transit. Higher per-unit cost, but essential for electronics, pharmaceuticals or perishables.

UAE Customs Requirements

The UAE is relatively open to imports, but certain product categories require special permits. Key points to know:

Working with an experienced freight forwarding firm makes a real difference here. Customs rules update frequently, and staying on top of them requires an active network on the ground.
